<p>The eight Danish universities have joined forces with the
Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (GUCAS) to
establish a new Sino-Danish University Centre in China. Now, 76
Danish students have applied for one of four new graduate programs
in China. Never before have so many Danish students applied to
study in China. The vastly increased interest indicates that the
collaboration between Denmark and China has cracked the code for
student mobility.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Danish students have primarily looking toward Western countries,
when looking to study abroad. Over 90% of the Danish students who
chose to take a Masters degree abroad through the Danish
Udlandsstipendieordning, traveled to Western countries. Few
students traveled to the BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and
China. Sino-Danish Centre for Education and Research was founded to
strengthen the collaboration between Denmark and China and to
ensure that more students turn their attention toward China and the
economic potential in the country.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>More than 450 Danish companies have already established
themselves in China and the need for graduates with an
understanding of China's culture and society is increasing.
Therefore, Sino-Danish Center is proud to announce that 76 Danish
students and a total of 104 students have chosen to apply for the
four brand new courses in China - Neuroscience &amp; Neuroimaging,
Water &amp; Environment, Innovation Management and Public
Management &amp; Social Development. The many applications are
currently being processed and the students will be notified on 01.
May. The Danish director of the Sino-Danish Center, Hans Gregersen,
is immensely proud to see so many students wanting to be a part of
the project:</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><em>"The number of applicants shows that it is possible to crack
the code of student mobility, but it requires a strong and stable
cooperation between universities, politicians and businesses. This
success is due to a targeted effort by the Sino-Danish Center
Secretariat in collaboration with the individual Danish
universities. Danish students are very interested in the
opportunity to study in China and Sino-Danish Center is pleased to
see the students wanting to be a part of the project!"</em></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Although it has previously been possible to study in China,
Danish students have rarely taken advantage of the opportunity. Now
that Denmark and China are working together to create the
Sino-Danish Center in China, the interest from the Danish students,
however, has proven to be great. Students want the chance to really
understand the Chinese culture, says the chairman of the Rectors'
Conference, Jens Oddershede:</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><em>"A two-year Master's Degree in China provides students with
a range of skills that the Danish business community and academia
have never seen. I am convinced that students will contribute to
strengthen the collaboration between Denmark and China in research,
education and business."</em></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Jens Oddershede, a deep understanding of Chinese
culture is vital for the student's future opportunities in the
country. China has a unique culture that requires insight and
experience. For the many Danish companies currently working in
China, candidates with knowledge and understanding of the Chinese
culture are very sought after. Mads Lebech, Managing Director of
Industriens Fond, says:</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><em>"For Danish companies, it is associated with significant
challenges to crack the code to success in China and other Asian
emerging markets. The Danish industry is stronger when businesses
have access to the right educational and human skills. Sino-Danish
Center is a win for both students and businesses. But all the
research collaboration will also provide value back at the
universities in Denmark."</em></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>The collaboration between Denmark and China through the
Sino-Danish Center shows that Danish students are ready to seize
opportunities in the world's most populous nation. The increase of
Danish students interested in studying in China is impressive and
the Sino-Danish Centre will be there to assist the students
throughout the whole process!</p>

<p>Opinions were many when experts discussed&nbsp;how foreign
researchers working in China can and should protect their research
results.&nbsp; But no one would testify to the title of the seminar.
In fact, Flemming Besenbacher, iNANO, argued that it is dangerous
not to take your research to China. The more than 50 scholars and
administrators who participated in the seminar at DTU on 1 December
2011 took home helpful and thought provoking insights regarding
university related intellectual property rights (IPR) and
collaboration with Chinese partners.&nbsp; The seminar featured two
experts on IPR and China - Thomas Pattloch, Taylor Wessing and
Ulrike Tagscherer, Chinese Academy of Sciences - as well as three
Danish senior scientists with extensive experiences from
collaboration with Chinese partners. The seminar was organized by
TECH-TRANS, Danish Innovation Center, Shanghai and SDC.</p>

<p>Scholarships can provide you with a lot of new opportunities
when visiting China. You should examine which scholarships you can
apply for as soon as possible and it is also important that you are
creative in your search. Even though some scholarships can seem
insignificant compared to others, we recommend that you explore the
possibilities. SDC will provide information about new opportunities
for scholarships, and you are welcome to contact us, should you
need help.</p>

<p>Keep in mind that you will be registered at the Chinese
University GUCAS and not the Danish university. This can lead to
some scholarships being unavailable, but may open other doors and
provide new opportunities.</p>

<p>We recommend that you buy&nbsp; <a
href="http://www.bogpriser.dk/work-8877842-legathaandbogen-uddannelse-2012/">
"Legathåndbogen 2012"</a>. The book will give you an overview over
how you should apply for scholarships and contains a list of
scholarships and funds, good advice and guidance.</p>

<p>On January 9, Mads Lebech, CEO at The Danish Industry Foundation
and Sten Scheibye, Chairman of the Board of the Danish Industry
Foundation and Chairman of the Danish Trade Council's Board of
Directors visited the Yanqihu Campus, where construction of&nbsp;
numerous new campus buildings are in progress. The visitors got a
guided tour of the new, vast campus area and inspected the location
of the future House of Danish Industry that will house the future
SDC master programs. The visit also included a luncheon with the
vice president of the Chinese partner university, GUCAS, Mr. Deng

<p><strong>The first day was focused on the education aspect of SDC
and the newly accredited Master programme in Neuroscience and
Neuroimaging was discussed.</strong> To emphasize the joint
collaborative efforts of this new education, each course has a
Chinese and a Danish co-organizer that discussed the detailed
planning and organization of each course during the workshop. In
addition, time was allocated to talk about progression within each
course and also between the courses. This was done to achieve a
coherent education where the students will be taught the skills in
the beginning of the education that are needed for the more
advanced courses. In addition, the most optimal overlap between the
courses was discussed. Finally, a proposal of the teaching
resources from both Chinese and Danish side was formulated for the
courses that will run in the fall of 2012 including some of the
best Chinese and Danish scientists within neuroimaging and
neuroscience.<br />
 &nbsp;<br />
The second day was allocated Chinese-Danish research
collaborations and was initiated by visits to the labs of CAS
institutes with Prof. Yong Fan, Institute of Automation, Prof. Yan
Zhuo, Institute of Biophysics, and Prof. Zengqiang Yuan, Institute
of Biophysics as hosts. These visits were very enlightening for the
Danish scientists and promoted interesting discussions as well as
reveal several avenues of collaborative research projects. In
addition, time allowed for short scientific presentations by all
participants resulting in an overview of the research interests of
the participants. To implement these collaborations, research stays
in China and Denmark are essential and several exchanges of
students and post docs were arranged. Furthermore, two Danish SDC
funded PhD students participated in the workshop, which gave them
the opportunity to discuss their projects with their Chinese
co-supervisors as well as plan their stays at the Chinese labs.</p>
